Great Lakes Downs: Champ wins again


The reigning Michigan horse of the year, Weatherstorm, returned to his winning ways Tuesday in the $50,000 Wolverine Stakes at Great Lakes Downs. The 4-year-old Weatherstorm, a Michigan champion at 2 and 3, got up by three-quarters of a length over Demagoguery, with favored Its His Time 2 1/2 lengths back. A past state horse of the year and Weatherstorm's stablemate, Rockem Sockem was a nose back in fourth after a furious rally outside

Under leading rider Freddie Mata for owner Marion Gorham and leading trainer Robert Gorham, Weatherstorm ran a textbook race. Sent off at a career-high 4-1, he sped the six furlongs in 1:13.70 and won for the 10th time in 13 starts.

* Charedi's Peak led all the way to capture the $50,000 Larkspur Handicap on Saturday. Nell's Enjoyment was second, with Sure Silver third. Trained by Ronnie Allen, Charedi's Peak is owned by Campbell Stable and was ridden by Mike Allen. She paid $3.40, completing the six furlongs in 1:15.61.

* Riders Luis Martinez Sr. and Mary Doser are both out of action after suffering injuries in the gate. Martinez is out for several weeks with a broken leg, while Doser's foot is swollen because of a sprained ankle. She may be able to return to riding this weekend.
