Good day for favorites at Finger Lakes

Heavy favorites from high-powered trainers Linda Rice and Rick Dutrow swept both stakes for New York-bred 2-year-olds on Monday's holiday card at Finger Lakes.

Mother Russia ($2.90), an easy winner of her career debut at Saratoga less than three weeks earlier, held off Fabulous Florence by three-quarters of a length in the $156,612 Lady Finger for fillies, while one race later, unbeaten colt Dagnabit ($3.10) extended his winning streak to three races with a 5 1/2-length romp in the $144,213 Aspirant.

The Rice-trained Mother Russia went head-to-head with the locally based Sapphire Sky through a half-mile in 45.97 seconds, drew clear by a half-length at the eighth pole, and withstood a late bid from 8-1 shot Fabulous Florence, a maiden who ran second in her career debut at Saratoga two weeks ago. It was another 5 1/2 lengths back to Sapphire Sky in third.

Mother Russia, ridden by Mike Luzzi, covered the six furlongs on a fast track in 1:12.21.

Dutrow, who won last year's Lady Finger with By the Light, this time took the Aspirant with Dagnabit, who shook off a brief challenge by second choice Momsboy approaching the turn and was held under wraps by Rudy Rodriguez for the final sixteenth of a mile. Winner of the Tremont at Belmont Park in his previous start in late June, Dagnabit ran the six furlongs in 1:11.02.

Momsboy held off Lookin at Her by a neck for second.
