Gonzalez enjoys solid week

Ramon Gonzalez, last year's leading trainer at SunRay Park, leads again this year with eight Thoroughbred wins and a pair of Quarter Horse tallies, including six wins last week.

Gonzalez and leading rider Alejandro Medillin teamed up to win the $75,000 Jack Cole Handicap with Cattleman Prospect, a $20,000 claim last winter. Cattleman Prospect, owned by Gonzalez and Cody Kelly, raced the mile in 1:36.07, just a couple just shy of the mile record at this oval. Ty's Pache was 2 1/4 lengths behind the winner, who returned $12 to his backers and boosted his earnings to just less than $325,000.

Cole, the former head of the New Mexico Breeders' Association, died last year and the NMBA Handicap was renamed in his honor. Favored Midnite Prospector, who finished fourth, won the race last year.

Medillin leads the Thoroughbred standings with 10 wins from 25 mounts.
