Golden Gate's National Handicapping Championship representative does track proud
By Chuck Dybdal
Email
Golden Gate Fields’s representative in last weekend’s Daily Racing Form/National Thoroughbred Racing Association National Handicapping Championship in Las Vegas, Donna Labriola of Richmond, finished fifth, earning $37,000. She missed fourth place and a $50,000 payoff by 10 cents.
Labriola was the highest-placing woman in the tournament.
Michael Beychok won the first-place prize of $1 million by playing Glorious Dancer in Saturday’s ninth race at Golden Gate Fields, an $8,000 maiden claimer. It was the final race of the contest, and Glorious Dancer’s nose victory gave Beychok the win by $1 over Dave Flanzbaum, who took home $150,000 for second.
◗ As has become a Super Bowl Sunday tradition at Golden Gate Fields, the winning jockey will draw a name after each race, and eight fans will receive a free 42-inch high-definition teevision. Sunday’s first post is 11:15 a.m.

MISCHIEF MAKER ran twice in mid-winter, showing ability in debut while caught wide early, followed by a third at 25-1 in overnight stake after breaking in a tangle; catches soft maiden special-weight field off a slate of Saratoga works. SUGAR BEACH is 0 for 13 after even try in muddy off-the-turfer eight days ago; second try in blinkers. SWEET KAKES takes blinkers off after giving futile chase to Sing Like a Bird in mud; something close to last two on fast footing give her money chances. ISLARAMA tries statebreds after willing finish behind 3-10 Jaggermama at Pimlico first time out.
