Golden Gate Fields: Lady of Fifty completes sweep with California Oaks victory
By Chuck Dybdal
Email
ALBANY, Calif. - Favored Lady of Fifty completed a sweep of the Golden Gate Fields series of races for 3-year-old fillies with her third straight wire-to-wire win as she won the $100,260 California Oaks on Saturday.
Lady of Fifty rated nicely under Russell Baze and pulled clear in the lane as she defeated stablemate Sweet Nothings by 3 1/4 lengths while winning the 1 1/16-mile race for 3-year-old fillies in 1:46.04.
Lady of Fifty won the six-furlong Golden Gate Debutante and one-mile Corte Madera as preps for the California Oaks. She won the Debutante by a nose over Power of Nine and defeated Sweet Nothings by one length in the Corte Madera.
Run the Blues Away, who had finished fourth in the Corte Madera, was third, 1 1/2 lenths behind Sweet Nothings.
"This filly is pretty manageable. She's got such a long, big, beautiful stride," said Baze.
Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer said, "Everybody with a good 3-year-old is thinking about bigger races on, and I'm thinking about them, too. There is nothing left for her here so she'll have to go someplace else, but she has plenty of options. Sweet Nothings is also a nice horse."
Lady of Fifty, a $40,000 Keeneland yearling purchase by Hollendorfer and Dr. George Todaro, earned $60,000 for her fourth career victory. The daughter of After Market has career earnings of $154,170.
Best Bets
Daylon Miracle is perfect in four career starts. She even won in her career debut despite getting impeded and making a break. The 3-year-old filly has good speed off the gate and should be able to take charge in the City of London Fillies and Mares final. Seeing as she will be 3-5 or so, let’s key her in the exacta over #1 Cynthia Loo and #4 Amber Kadabra.
