Golden Gate Fields: Jockey Mangalee injured, one horse euthanized following spill
By Chuck Dybdal
Email
Jockey Navin Mangalee sustained a fractured right clavicle and minor concussion when his mount in Sunday’s sixth race at Golden Gate Fields, Thirsty for More, clipped heels with Blast the Cat and fell in the stretch.
Black Mango fell over the fallen horse, but his rider, Jose Delgadillo, escaped injury. Black Mango fractured his front right leg and had to be euthanized.
Mangalee was taken to Highland Hospital in Oakland for a precautionary CT Scan. There was no report of any injuries sustained by Thirsty for More.
Blast the Cat, ridden by Pedro Flores, drifted in and had his heels clipped. He continued on and finished third but was disqualified and placed last.

That was a bad dwrck , I saw it too . Im glad Mr. Mangalee and his horse weren't hurt worse.Than I thought... and poor Black Mango ..jeez.. Jose Delgadillo is young and starting out ,, he rode one of my mares right as she was retiring and he was beginning ( she retired safe and sound and at home with us) but he's had a hard time..Up in Portland on a HORRIBLE day he blew both irons out of the gate ... I could hardly watch .. he made it ,, the whole race but looked terrifying.

I wondered where this guy went. He is a very talented jockey despite not getting good mounts....hope you get well soon. Thanks for the great rides.

I remember when Navin was a bug, very talented and terrific guy! Here's hoping for a healthy and speedy recover, Prayers to all his family, friends, and loved ones and Bless the horse who had to be put down, may he run, graze and be loved for all Eternity...

This scene was horrific. I'm so sorry for the injured jockey and hope he gets well soon. I would have thought Thirsty for more to be injured bc of the fall, he almost rolled over. So sad for Black Mango, and so many others, who die racing daily. This is the hardest thing to watch or hear about in this sport. This year already has seen too much injury for jockeys and too much death for TBs.

Get well, Mr. Mangalee. Glad it wasn't worse!
Of minor note, why is the arrow/circle right in the MIDDLE of the freeze frame?
The video is intentionally frozen so that we can SEE what happened.
If the incident on the tape is by chance in the center of the frame - which in this case, it is - the A/C covers it up.

One again the horses lives are marginalized - too bad more time and energy is not spent trying to save these horses -

There's no such thing as a "minor concussion." It's a concussion, period.

Thank god he got away with only this.Get well soon he is a brave guy.

This was a horrific looking accident. I am surprised (and relieved) to hear that Navin Mangalee was not more seriously injured and that Jose Delgadillo escaped injury. R.I.P. Black Mango. You will be missed.

Why even bother racing horses at this level? Put them into something they'll be good at, like eventing or show jumping. There's so much risk involved for barely nothing in return.

Best Bets
DRINK OR SINK went too fast on the lead last time before fading on the turf at Tampa, and should be less aggressive here with blinkers off. Olguin was aboard for his good fall races on the Poly, and should have him closing at a square price in his second start of the year. GOOD BETTER BEST finished up the track behind two next-out winners when he tried the dirt for the first time March 30 at Gulfstream. He hasn't faced this easy a field in a while, and is no stranger to filling out the exactor.
