Golden Gate Fields: Greenie wins Fishermans Wharf

ALBANY, Calif. - Favored Greenie ($2.80) raced three-wide in a four-way speed duel, took over into the lane and pulled away to win the $50,650 Fishermans Wharf Overnight Stakes on Thursday at Golden Gate Fields.

The 5-year-old Cal-bred won his third straight race and first stakes of his career, covering six furlongs in 1:09.48. Late-running High Standards finished second, beaten six lengths as he outfinished Left 'Em Burning by a neck.

"This time he showed good speed," winning jockey Martin Garcia said. "The others did, too, so I didn't want to use him too much early. At the quarter pole, I let him go, and he opened on the others."

"They were rocking and rolling (with 21.08 and 43.83 fractions), but he sat there with a handful of horse," winning trainer Art Sherman said. "I could see he was holding hard on him, then he just clucked to him at the quarter pole, and he went."

Greenie earned $28,150 and now has earnings of $227,331 for eight victories in 14 starts.
