Golden Gate Fields: Bonfante captures Ken Maddy Sprint

ALBANY, Calif. - Bonfante ($8.20) survived a claim of foul by runner-up Flying Supercon's jockey as he scored a 1 1/2-length victory in the $75,000 at Golden Gate Fields on Saturday.

Bonfante sat behind Flying Supercon down the backstretch and made his move as the field of six Cal-breds turned for home in the six-furlong race. He came in a bit and appeared to brush with Flying Supercon before the eighth pole.

He pulled away in the lane, winning in 1:08.33. Flying Supercon held second, beating Kool Suggestion by three-quarters of a length.

"I told (jockey) Miguel (Perez) I didn't want him to try to challenge Flying Supercon down the backstretch, and he rode him perfectly," winning trainer Steve Specht said. "This horse doesn't have to be on the lead to win.

"I thought Grand Appointment would go early. It worked out just right. We were sitting second when the other one couldn't go with him."

The Frankfurt Stables and Eugene Tenbrink homebred earned $41,250, lifting his career earnings to $148,232 with his fourth victory in 12 starts.
