Golden Circle Stakes: Shippers galore

A slew of interesting shippers make up the the bulk of the field of nine for Saturday's $50,000 Golden Circle Stakes at Prairie Meadows. The six-furlong race for 3-year-old colts is difficult to assess, as visitors from Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Kentucky, Illinois, and Oklahoma will put their talents on display.

Minnetonka Mist, a winner of two restricted stakes last fall at Turf Paradise, will make his seasonal debut off a string of fast morning drills in Arizona. A California-bred son of Benchmark, he has abundant speed and is the likely pacesetter. He led the entire way winning the $84,000 ATBA Sales Stakes by three-quarters of a length last October. His trainer, David Van Winkle, has won three stakes here during his career.

Hold That Broad arrives from Chicago in career-best form after a pair of Hawthorne allowance scores. Trained by Michele Boyce, his most recent win came on April 9 when he controlled the pace to score by three-quarters of a length. In this speed-laden field, he may have to show a new dimension.

Albacore Bob looks to possess the best finishing kick in this field. A Florida-bred son of Dance Master, He showed his determination March 16 when winning Turf Paradise's Zany Tactics Stakes by a nose.

The locally based Slater's Peanuts failed in Oaklawn's slop on April 2. Before that he had strung together three straight victories in the Southwest. Trained by Kenny Smith, Slater's Peanuts is the lone entrant to have raced over this surface. He will be ridden by Tim Doocy.
