Go Ask Daisy wins Mid-Peninsula Stakes

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Go Ask Daisy ($24) won her stakes debut, wearing down pacesetting odds-on favorite Smoke Break in the lane to win the $52,100 Mid-Peninsula Stakes for 2-year-old Cal-bred fillies at the Bay Meadows Fair on Saturday.

Go Ask Daisy, fourth in her June 11 debut at Bay Meadows, won a $40,000 maiden claimer in her next start at Hollywood Park in wire-to-wire style. She couldn't match Smoke Break's early fractions of 21.94 and 44.89 in the 5 1/2-furlong race.

She stayed along the rail as Flag Burner moved up to try to challenge Smoke Break. She rallied along the rail in deep stretch as Smoke Break drifted out and won the race by one-half length in 1:03.74 with Smoke Break holding second by a neck.

"This filly's bred to run long. We're going to nominate her to Cal Cup," winning trainer Brian Koriner said. "She relaxed when Joe (Castro) took hold of her and did everything right. She settled right in behind them and wasn't bothered by dirt in her face."

Go Ask Daisy, purchased for $40,000 at the Barretts March Sale, earned $29,100 boosting her career earnings to $44,430 with two wins in three starts.
