Gleason has tough pair

Email

AURORA, Colo. - Trainer Kenneth Gleason appears to hold the upper hand in Sunday's $25,000-added Molly Brown Handicap at Arapahoe Park. Gleason will saddle both Vannacide and Ladysgotthelooks in the six-furlong race for fillies and mares, which drew a field of seven.

Both horses prepped well here in allowance company on opening weekend for Gleason, who is always a force in the local stakes ranks.

Vannacide finished well to be third behind Amaras and Real Spitfire after stumbling at the start in a 5 1/2-furlong race here on June 6. A 5-year-old by Slewacide, Vannacide has been a model of consistency for owner-breeder Bill Vanlandingham, winning 6 of her 17 career starts and hitting the board in six other races. Last season she won half of her six outings, including the Miss Kansas City Stakes at Woodlands. Orlando Martinez has the mount.

Ladysgotthelooks finished fourth in the June 6 allowance won by Amaras as the odds-on choice. She was impressive in winning the Knotts and Spicy handicaps here last season, has won 6 of her 13 lifetime starts and has career earnings of $93,000. Russell Vicchrilli has the return call.

Amaras will be seeking her third straight score. Trained by Jon Arnett, he won a $10,000 claiming affair at Albuquerque back in April. She was never headed in her local allowance debut, her third win of the season from five outings. Travis Wales will again be aboard.

* Trainers John Hammes and Jon Arnett had big days here last weekend. Hammes won 5 of 11 qualifying races held for the Cherry Creek Futurity and Derby here on Saturday. On Monday, Arnett saddled the winners of 5 of the 9 Thoroughbred races.
