Giwner: The journey continues with Ohello Blue Chip

Tomorrow is the night!

When I decided to purchase 1% of Ohello Blue Chip from TheStable.ca a few months ago, I never thought the prospect of her racing would peak my interest. Honestly, my goal was simply to provide some positive press for fractional ownership throughout the year. But she is racing! And I’m actually excited.

Ohello Blue Chip will make her career debut in the seventh race on Tuesday night at Mohawk Racetrack. The daughter of American Ideal-Cheer My Dear has her work cut out for her from post nine in the field of 10, but is listed at 5-1 on the morning line. Thestable.ca founder, trainer Anthony MacDonald, will be in the bike.

Above and beyond the thrill of racing, one of the great benefits of owning a horse is visiting the barn. I stopped by BayCairn Training Centre to check out Ohello Blue Chip and meet Anthony and his wife Amy in person. While I was happy with the looks of the filly, I was more impressed by Anthony, who took at least a half-hour to chat with me about all facets of his operation.

The bottom line is that Anthony MacDonald gets it! He understands that Thestable.ca is bigger than just him. He gets the value in building something that can broaden the appeal of harness racing to the masses.

But back to the matter at hand today. Ohello Blue Chip is coming off a sharp 1:56 4/5 qualifier (last quarter in 27 2/5) and MacDonald remains high on her prospects. At this point, so am I.

Assuming all goes well, I’m hoping to see her in action at Yonkers in the second leg of the New York Sire Stakes at Yonkers Raceway on July 18. It really is thrilling to think that a horse I own even a small piece of could be racing in a stakes race. I’m even thinking of bringing my kids to see her if she races.

Speaking of kids, I saw a couple at The Meadowlands with their two kids on Saturday morning for the baby races. They told me it was the first time they had ever come to the track. I didn’t ask if they owned a piece of a horse racing, but that is really what fractional ownership is all about—getting new people to the track and interested in the sport.

Good luck Ohello Blue Chip. Go get ‘em!

[UPDATE: As everyone knows, there are ups and downs in life. I was just informed that Ohello Blue Chip will be scratched tomorrow night. She is not sick, but she showed some signs of bleeding the other day after training and the decision has been made to treat her with Lasix. So, I will have to wait a week or so before watching her race for the first time. Good things come to those who wait.]
