Giwner: Handicapping the mandatory payout Super Hi-5 at Pompano

There are $202,965 reasons to play the last race at Pompano Park on Wednesday night as the track offers a mandatory payout of its Super Hi-Five Jackpot. This pool should grow to about $500,000 and offer bettors huge value for their buck if they can correctly select the first five finishers from race 10.

After carefully studying the 11-horse field of $4,000 claimers, I’m pretty convinced that either (6) AMERICAN GOLD (5-2 morning line) or (9) FOX VALLEY CHRISTO (8-1 morning line) will come out victorious. American Gold has won two straight races at this level. He displayed some early speed last week and won easily against many of the same foes he faces tonight. Fox Valley Christo only finished third in his last start as the 2-1 favorite, but he was up in class against $6,000 claimers and wound up pacing over a second faster than tonight’s likely favorite American Gold. It is also worth noting that Fox Valley Christo won by seven-plus lengths in his last start at this level. Suffice to say, he’ll be going off at lower than 8-1 on Wednesday.

(1) DR FLAMINGO was used early in the mile last week to secure position and chased home American Gold in a good effort. He seems like a must use for second. After that the race becomes a wide-open crapshoot for the remaining spots. (4) DOCDOR LAUGHING, who has finished up the track in all his recent starts, looks like the only throw-out, though I’ll toss him in for fifth just in case.

One horse that will be noticeably absent from the top three slots on my tickets is 7-2 early second choice (5) ANGLE OF ATTACK. That one looked funky behind the gate and ultimately made a break last week as the 3-2 favorite. In his start two-back, he set a reasonable clip and tired in the stretch. He seems to have a declining form pattern and is hard for me to endorse.

I’m going to give out two tickets. My main one will key American Gold over Dr Flamingo and Fox Valley Christo.

 6 / 1,9 / 1,2,3,7,8,9,10,11 / 1,2,3,5,7,8,9,10,11 / ALL = $137.20

My secondary ticket will focus on Fox Valley Christo on top of American Gold, who has finished at least second in his last five starts.

9 / 6 / 1,2,3,7,8,10,11 / 1,2,3,5,7,8,10,11 / ALL = $68.60

One final note, there are two also-eligible horses that can draw into the race if a horse scratches by noon on Wednesday. If that occurs, I’ll update with revised tickets.

Post time for the Pompano card is slated for 7:30 p.m. with race 10 expected to go behind the gate about 10:15.
