Giwner: Hambletonian Day Wagering

Email

Hambletonian Day is special for many reasons, but from a handicapping perspective, especially in 2015, it is unmatched in Harness Racing. Five guaranteed multi-race wagers, a $231K mandatory payout carryover and large pools form what will probably be the best card of the year.

The above said, the best part may be the 16-race card. No, I don’t want to see bulky cards every day, but once in a while, when quality partners with quantity, the result is enjoyable and profitable. Being a winning handicapper requires patience and sometimes that means waiting a long time between wagers. On Hambo Day, even the most astute player should be able to find three to four prime horses to key in on. Let’s take a look at my top value plays and then I’ll run down my multi-race tickets (my race 13 ticket is obviously missing numbers for the Hambo final which isn’t decided) and super hi-5 play for the big carryover.

But first, here is my Pick 5 ticket for the $29,460 carryover on Friday night's first race at the Meadowlands:

2,3,5,8 / 3,4,5,11 / 8 / 2,3,4,7 / 3,7 = $64

Race 3 - Lady Liberty

There could be great value in Rocklamation coming off seventh and eighth-place finishes. She clearly had traffic trouble in her last start and spent way too much time on the rim in her previous effort. She has one good move and if driver Yannick Gingras times it right, watch out! I’m looking for about 8-1 on her.

Race 8 - Hambo Elim #1

The Bank is stuck in the tougher Hambo elimination but couldn’t have asked for a better post. He has good speed to his inside and all of his main competitors are stuck with far outside posts. This should mean a sweet trip in the pocket or possibly setting the pace. 4-1 is my target price.

Race 10 - Vincennes

I really love Resolve in this spot. He has been racing great versus the best older trotter in the country (JL Cruze) and can’t be faulted for his winless record in 2015. Drawing the outside post 10 should make his price more desirable. If I can get 2-1 I’ll be thrilled.

$50K Pick 5 - Race 1

6,8 / 3 / 2,4,5,11 / 1,5,6,9 / 1,4,5,6,9,10 = $96

$50K PICK 4 - RACE 3

2,4,5,11 / 1,5,6,9 / 1,4,5,6,9,10 / 6 = $48

$75K PICK 5 - RACE 7

1,2,4,5,9 / 2,8,10 / 2,9 / 10 / 2 = $15

$100K PICK 4 - RACE 9

2,9 / 2,6,9,10 / 2 / 1,2,7 = $12

$100K PICK 4 - RACE 13

HAMBO / 4 / 2,4 / 1,6,8,10 = TBD

$231K SUPER HI-5 - RACE 16

8 / 1,6,10 / 1,5,6,7,10 / ALL / ALL = $172.80

(All multi-race wagers are 50 cent base. Super Hi-5 wager 20 cent base.)
