Gill gets Lone Star stalls

Michael Gill, the nation's leading owner in victories and money won and controversial for his aggressive claiming tactics, has been granted 50 stalls for the upcoming Breeders' Cup meet at Lone Star Park.

The division is expected to be trained by Gamaliel Vazquez, who has handled Gill's horses this year at Fair Grounds and Monmouth Park.

Larry Craft, Lone star's director of racing, said the meet "ties in with the end of Monmouth and the opening of Fair Grounds. It works out for him."

Gill, who has been denied stalls at some tracks in the East, claimed a large number of horses in California last year before leaving that state. Craft said he believed Gill has never started a horse at Lone Star.

Lone Star's 19-date fall meet will run through Oct. 31, with the Breeders' Cup set for Oct. 30.
