Get Lucky group hard to gauge

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - The inconsistency of the seven fillies and mares entered in Wednesday's $65,000 Get Lucky Stakes could give handicappers fits when analyzing the mile and 70-yard race over Aqueduct's inner track.

Will Awesome Ashley repeat her performance in the Jan. 9 Plankton Stakes, which she won by 3 1/2 lengths, or revert to the Dec. 12 You'd Be Surprised, which she lost by 20 1/2?

Is Nijinsky Bullet's runner-up effort in the Dec. 14 Ladies a true bill, or was it her dismal effort in the Plankton?

Yet Again has been an in-and-outer, usually firing every other time. Having won the Affectionately two weeks ago, she is likely to misfire Wednesday.

Sherine did not return well from an extended layoff, and last winter handicappers will remember she bombed as the even-money choice in the Dearly Precious only to win the Grade 2 Comely Stakes at 13-1. Are We Dreamin, 7 for 19 in 2008, has not run particularly well in either of her two starts in 2009.

That brings us to Awesome I Am and Devil House, perhaps the two most consistent horses in this field.

Awesome I Am has finished first or third in all seven of her dirt starts (albeit beaten 18 1/2 lengths when third to Music Note in the Grade 1 Gazelle). She finished 12th in a race on turf and in a race on synthetic. Since getting a brief freshening following the synthetic debacle in the Raven Run, Awesome I Am ran third in the Foil Stakes - a race that produced five next-out winners, including Awesome I Am in the Restored Hope.

Awesome I Am has had 33 days to recover from her victory in the Restored Hope, and her connections feel she is improving as she ages, which is a consistent trait of Awesome Again progeny.

"She's a later-developing filly,'' trainer John Terranova said. "She's flashed some big races at times throughout the early part of her career. Now she seems to be going forward. She's good right now.''

The one caveat surrounding Awesome I Am is the potential for a wet track. If Aqueduct's inner track is wet Wednesday, Awesome I Am could scratch.

Devil House is a need-the-lead type and she will most likely be sent on Wednesday by C.C. Lopez. She finished second to Awesome Ashley in the Plankton after setting extremely quick early fractions.
