General Meeting, a top stallion in California in recent years, has been pensioned because of severe arthritis in his neck, Golden Eagle Farm announced Thursday.

General Meeting, 17, will undergo treatment at Golden Eagle, the Ramona, Calif., farm owned by Betty Mabee.

General Meeting has sired such major stakes winners as Excellent Meeting and General Challenge, who raced as an entry in the 1999 Kentucky Derby, finishing fifth and 11th. General Challenge won the 1999 Pacific Classic and Santa Anita Derby, while Excellent Meeting won the Santa Anita Oaks and Las Virgenes Stakes.

During that 1999 season, General Meeting led California's sires with $4.2 million in progeny earnings. To date, his offspring have earned $22.6 million.

General Meeting is also the sire of stakes winners Career Collection, Classy Cara, Magical Allure, and Yearly Report. He stood for $10,000 this year, having stood for as much as $50,000 earlier in his stud career.

The Mabee family raced General Meeting, who won 4 of 17 starts and $441,125 and was a stakes winner himself.
