General Council romps in Charles Taylor Derby

General Council led from wire-to-wire to win the Charles Taylor Derby by 18 1/2 lengths.

General Council was a lopsided winner of the $55,000 Charles Taylor Derby on Saturday night at The Downs at Albuquerque, romping by 18 1/2 lengths over Wine N Divine. It was another 4 1/4 lengths back in third to Outrageous Green.

The Charles Taylor Derby was run over 1 1/16 miles.

General Council ($9.20) took quick command of the race, as he was up by four lengths through an opening quarter in 24.70 seconds. He maintained a clear advantage through an opening half-mile in 47.56 seconds and six furlongs in 1:11.62. General Council poured it on in the stretch, opening up on the field and going on to cover the distance on a fast track in 1:43.56.

Elvin Gonzalez was aboard for trainer Jose R. Gonzalez Jr.

General Council, a son of Big Drama, races for Erin Gonzalez and Tim Archuleta. He earned $33,000 for the win, which was his first in a stakes and fourth overall from 12 starts. General Council has now earned $72,166.

Ol’ Drunk Daddy, who was the favorite, rallied from last for fourth.
