Gemologist colt zips a furlong in 9 4/5 seconds at OBS

Email

A colt from the first crop of Gemologist usurped the overall fastest time for an eighth of a mile during Monday’s under-tack show for the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co. June sale of 2-year-olds and horses of racing age, covering the distance in 9 4/5 seconds.

Achieving that time over the Ocala Training Center’s all-weather Safetrack surface was Hip 215, a Gemologist colt out of the winning Storm Cat mare Distant Storm, who is the dam of one winner from three foals to race.

Champion 2-year-old filly Outstandingly is in the colt’s extended family, as are Grade 2 winner Mister Storm and Grade/Group 3 winners Lovlier, Della Francesca, Caress, Golden Velvet, Archimedes, Bernstein, Country Cat, and Wiseman's Ferry. Top Line Sales consigns the colt as agent.

Two horses tied for the fastest time over a quarter-mile, going in 21 seconds flat, just a tick off the overall leader, an Into Mischief colt who went in 20 4/5 seconds on Sunday. Following are the two horses to achieve Monday’s fastest time at the distance.

• Hip 204, a Harlan's Holiday colt out of the winning Wavering Monarch mare Desert Queen, whose seven winners from 11 foals to race include Grade 1 winner and graded producer Marylebone, stakes-placed Unigold and Shiva Ryan, and graded producer Alpha Mama, the dam of Grade 2 winner Alpha Kitten. Other notable horses found on the page are Grade 3 winner Overturned and stakes winners Squall Valley, In Full View, Wavering Scene, Seen Dancing, and Flicker Queen. Thoroughbred Champions Training Center consigns as agent.

• Hip 221, a first-crop Dominus filly who is the first foal out of the stakes-placed Dixieland Heat mare Dixieland Baby. The Louisiana-bred's extended family features stakes winner Blue Tytes and stakes-placed Lady Harcris, Merry Darter, and Blue Tartar. She is consigned by Southern Chase Farm as agent.

The breeze shows continue daily through Friday, with each session beginning at 7:30 a.m. Eastern. The auction will take place June 14-17, starting each day at 10:30 a.m.
