Geeky Gorgeous named New Jersey-bred Horse of the Year


Daniel J. Lopez's Geeky Gorgeous has been honored as the New Jersey-bred Horse of the Year for 2013. The 5-year-old Devil His Due mare, who was bred by Joe-Dan Farm, also garnered awards as the state’s champion handicap mare and champion sprinter.

Geeky Gorgeous won three stakes in 2013, capturing the New Jersey Breeders’ Handicap against males, and the Regret Stakes and Cornucopia Stakes; the latter two victories came against open company. The mare also finished second in the Open Mind Handicap. Geeky Gorgeous, trained by her owner, amassed seasonal earnings of $169,200.

Javerre, New Jersey’s Horse of the Year in 2012, was named the state’s outstanding handicap male. Rainbow Heir was named champion 3-year-old; the Wildcat Heir colt won the Grade 3 Jersey Shore Stakes for owner/breeder New Farm. Other award winners were Exit Stage Left and Flay Mignon as champion 2-year-old colt and filly, respectively; and Richiefromshoprite as champion turf runner.

Defrere, a full brother to leading sire Dehere, was named the Thoroughbred Breeders' Association of New Jersey's Stallion of the Year for the sixth consecutive year. Rainbow Pride, the dam of Rainbow Heir, was named outstanding broodmare.
