Gasia wins Bayakoa photo


Gasia won a photo over the stretch-running Brownie Points in the $100,000 Bayakoa Stakes at Oaklawn Park on Wednesday. It was 1 3/4 lengths back to Fiery Pursuit in third.

Gasia ($10.80) let the pace horses go in the 1 1/16-mile Bayakoa, as Fiery Pursuit set a pressured pace of 23.60 seconds for the opening quarter-mile, 47.33 for the half-mile mark, and 1:12.25 for six furlongs.

Gasia closed well through the stretch, and won by a head over Brownie Points. Gasia covered the distance over a fast track in 1:45.32.

Terry Thompson rode the winner for trainer Larry Jones.

Gasia, a 4-year-old daughter of Silver Deputy who races for Susan Knoll, was coming off a fifth-place finish in the Grade 3 Azeri Breeders' Cup at Oaklawn. She earned $60,000 for Wednesday's win, which was her sixth from 15 career starts. She has now earned $423,931.

The win in the Bayakoa was Gasia's third in a stakes. She also won the Susan's Girl at Delaware Park and the Instant Racing here last year.

The Bayakoa was part of the Racing Festival of the South at Oaklawn, when at least one stakes a day is run over the final week of the meet, which closes Saturday.- Mary Rampellini
