Fund-raising day for a recovering Brimo

Jockeys across North America are being asked to donate one mount fee next Saturday to the Julia Brimo Fund to help offset the expenses of Brimo, a jockey who suffered head and back injuries in an Oct. 30 spill at Keeneland. In honor of Brimo, jockeys will wear two patches on their boots that day: one with her name, "Julia," and the other for the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund.

Brimo, 33, is being treated at the Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto and is scheduled to be transferred early this week to the Lyndhurst Centre, a noted rehabilitation facility, also in Toronto. According to a close friend of Brimo's, she is now walking with assistance, continues to make steady improvement, and her long-term outlook is positive.

The Julia Brimo Fund was established at Fifth Third Bank by Cindy Werner, the wife of trainer Ronny Werner. Contributions can be made by sending a check made out to the Julia Brimo Fund to Cindy Werner at 1116 Flat Rock Road, Louisville, Ky., 40245.
