Full sisters try for rare double

ARCADIA, Calif. - Except for identical pedigrees, Tiz Elemental and Tiz a Blend have very little in common.

Tiz Elemental is a two-time stakes winner who will be strongly favored Sunday in the Grade 3 Las Flores Handicap at Santa Anita. Tiz a Blend is an allowance mare who will be a borderline longshot one race later in the $100,000 Valentine Dancer Handicap.

The full sisters, by Cee's Tizzy and out of Blending Element, do not even look alike, trainer Carla Gaines said.

"Tiz a Blend is a real dapply gray and kind of short-backed," she said. "Tiz Elemental has a little more length and is a little more delicate-framed."

When they race a half-hour apart Sunday, Tiz Elemental and Tiz a Blend will try to pull off a racing rarity by becoming the first full siblings to win stakes on the same Santa Anita card since Pirate's Revenge and Echo of Yesterday on March 26, 1994.

Pirate's Revenge won the Boo La Boo Stakes for filly sprinters; Echo of Yesterday won the Crystal Water Handicap for turf horses. Trained by Ron Ellis, they were sired by Pirate's Bounty and out of Symbolically.

While Gaines and owner Warren Williamson rest division leader Nashoba's Key, their 4-year-old filly Tiz Elemental might fill the summer void. She will try for her first graded stakes Saturday.

Six fillies and mares entered the Las Flores at 6 1/2 furlongs. In addition to 120-pound topweight Tiz Elemental, the field includes pacesetter Overly Tempting, Grade 1 Santa Monica Handicap upset winner Intangaroo, Glorified, and outsiders Acinonyx and Butters.

Owned and bred by Williamson, Tiz Elemental chipped a knee winning the Melair Stakes last summer and won her Feb. 24 comeback in the $109,000 Honest Lady Stakes.

"We always hoped she would be like her dam's side of the family; they improve with age," Gaines said.

Tiz Elemental has won 4 of 6 and earned $303,260.

Victor Espinoza rides Tiz Elemental, who has enough tactical speed to stay within striking range of front-runner Overly Tempting.

As for Valentine Dancer longshot Tiz a Blend, who will break from post 3, Gaines likes her chances.

"She looks good in that race," Gaines said. Her last start "was too far and she had an outside post. I like her post [on Sunday]; she can sit behind and pounce."
