Fuentes makes it four straight big ones

VANCOUVER, British Columbia – Jockey Frank Fuentes won his fourth straight $100,000 stakes race at Hastings, taking the $108,134 Fantasy Stakes aboard Fashionable Affair on Saturday.

Fuentes’s streak began with the Jack Diamond Futurity on Oct. 5. His next two wins in races worth $100,000 or more were in the Grade 3 Ballerina and Grade 3 Premiers.

Fashionable Affair, who is trained by Rob Gilker, came from well off the pace to win by three-quarters of a length over Lornamahra. Fuentes did a good job of avoiding Boxcars, who had lost her rider, Mark Walker, leaving the starting gate. Boxcars ended up racing with the leaders the whole way. Fuentes moved Fashionable Affair inside of Boxcars during the stretch run.

“I was keeping a close eye on the loose horse,” said Fuentes. “I had a lot of horse and just wanted to make sure we didn’t get stopped.”

Fashionable Affair paid $23.20 and earned $64,883 for her owners, Leo and Norma Shaw. Gilker claimed Fashionable Affair on behalf of the Shaws when she debuted in a $15,000 maiden race on August 8.

Heavily favored P. S. Good N Ready had a rough trip while finishing fourth. Going around the first turn she stumbled after checking sharply. Sheashell set the pace and then held on to finish third.

Final time for the 1 1/16 miles was 1:48.14.
