Friday card filled with 2-year-olds

AUBURN, Wash. - The emphasis will be on youth at Emerald Downs Friday, as five of the eight races on the card, including the feature, are for 2-year-olds.

The feature, the seventh race, is a six-furlong dash for $16,000 to $14,000 claimers that has attracted a field of eight horses.

Time to Weave is the one to beat off a strong second-place finish in a 5 1/2-furlong race run under the same conditions Aug. 17. Time to Weave was beaten by only a length by Weavemesomefreedom in that race, after helping to set the early pace. Although Time to Weave must go another sixteenth of a mile Friday, he is favorably drawn on the outside and should be prominent throughout under jockey Frank Gonsalves at 118 pounds.

Two others in Friday's field, Idel Zack and Majestic Willie, finished sixth and seventh in the Aug. 17 race, while the rest of the field is coming off maiden wins. Onlysplendidson, Long On Pride, and Got It to Go graduated on the maiden $8,000 level, while Manito Gentleman and Meadow Slew scored their initial victories against $12,500 maidens.

Manito Gentleman poses the most serious threat to Time to Weave, as he defeated a good group by nearly five lengths in a five-furlong race that was run in 59.20 seconds on Aug. 2. Among those he defeated that day were Meadow Slew and Got It to Go, who returned to win their next starts. Interestingly, Got It to Go scored his maiden win on Aug. 17, the same day that Time to Weave lost to Weavemesomefreedom in 1:05.40. Got It to Go went considerably faster, running the 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:04.80.
