Freshman sire Coil gets first winner


Freshman sire Coil, by Point Given out of Eversmile, by Theatrical, sired his first winner from his first starter when his juvenile filly Recoiling won a 4 1/2-furlong maiden race for at Golden Gate on May 1.

In the eight-horse field of open maidens, Recoiling, the 2-1 second choice, was prominent from the start and prevailed by 1 3/4 lengths over first-time starter Only You Babe, another of the four fillies in the field.

Bred in California by Martin Bach, Recoiling is campaigned by Martin Bach, Lynn Gitomer, and Daniel Weiner and trained by William Morey. She completed the distance in :52.29, a little more than a second slower than the track record.

Coil, campaigned by Karl Watson, Mike Pegram, and Paul Weitman and trained by Bob Baffert, won the Grade 1 Haskell Invitational Handicap in 2011 among his four stakes wins. He won seven of 14 starts and earned $1,154,360 while racing from ages 2 to 5.

Coil stands at Magali Farms in Santa Ynez, Cal., for a fee of $5,000. He has 59 foals in his first crop.
