Fresh 'Miz Blue' favored

JAMAICA, N.Y. - Trainer Jimmy Jerkens is off to an excellent start in Aqueduct stakes this year.

Jerkens won the Count Fleet with Iron Deputy on Jan. 5 and the Paumonok with Wrangler last Saturday. Jerkens was shut out of a stakes double when Madame X Ski finished second in Sunday's Busanda.

On Saturday at the Big A, Jerkens saddles the favorite, Dat You Miz Blue, in the $75,000-added Correction Handicap for fillies and mares. Dat You Miz Blue, a graded stakes winner for Cynthia Knight, is the 121-pound highweight in the nine-horse field.

The six-furlong Correction is Dat You Miz Blue's first start since Dec. 8 when she finished second as the favorite in the Garland of Roses. Dat You Miz Blue, who usually controls the pace, was hustled to keep up with the pacesetter and winner, Raging Fever. Dat You Miz Blue was beaten 1 1/2 lengths by Raging Fever, who came back and won the Grade 3 First Lady at Gulfstream.

Jerkens said he was perplexed that Dat You Miz Blue was not more aggressive early in the Garland of Roses and decided to give his New York-bred mare a freshening, taking a pass on the Interborough on Jan. 1.

"Fresh horses usually have that speed," he said. "If she breaks good, she'll be on the lead or close to it."

Dat You Miz Blue got saddled with post 9 for the Correction.

Richard Migliore rides Dat You Miz Blue, who smoked in a half-mile work in 46.68 seconds on Jan. 26.

The ultra-consistent Bedside Manner lost the What a Summer Stakes at Laurel by a whisker on Jan. 12 and gets another crack at the upset winner, Outstanding Info, who benefited from a sizzling pace.

"We made the first move at that fast pace," Bedside Manner's trainer, Mike Hushion, said. "The winner came from last to beat her."

Maddie May, a restricted stakes winner, was no factor in the What a Summer, finishing fifth.

Look of the Lynx finished third in the Interborough, beaten 5 3/4 lengths by Xtra Heat. City Fair was second, a neck in front of Look of the Lynx.

Look of the Lynx's trainer, John Kimmel, said she might have had more at the finish if she hadn't been pressured to keep up with the speedy Xtra Heat.

"I think we would have been a solid second if we had been a little more patient with her," Kimmel said.

Cantkeepfromsingin, who trounced Look of the Lynx in a classified allowance race in November, will need a top effort to beat Dat You Miz Blue.
