Free's Del Mar plays for Sunday, August 6

Due to small fields and key scratches, wagering action has been limited at Del Mar.

Neither play on Friday reached the minimum odds requirement. In race 3, Splashof Panache (3-1 minimum) started at 5-2; in race 7, Jack's Wild (9-1 minimum) started at 6.80-1. Jack's Wild got stopped cold while rallying in the stretch. His sixth-place finish was inconclusive, and from a betting perspective, it did not matter. No bets.

Saturday started the same. First-time starter Lady Sorceress started at only 8.70-1 in race 3 (minimum odds 9-1), and therefore was no action.

But in race 8, Smart n Quiet did start at a huge number. She went to post at a fat 32-1 in the Grade 3 Sorrento Stakes, and provided a thrill. Smart n Quiet stole a a soft opening quarter-mile (:22.62), battled for the lead into the lane, and weakened to third.

Trifecta bettors clever enough to put Smart n Quiet under favorites Untouched Talent and Outofthepast (they ran one-two) got back $62.60 for $1. But the $25 win bet on Smart n Quiet was a loss for the race, and the day.

The main track slowed considerably on Friday and Saturday, but it continues to play fair. Closers win if the pace is severe; front-runners win if they are the best horse.

It is another weak card on Sunday, and the whole $50 is going on a filly that might not be the most likely winner. But she does offer the best value.

Race 9

First-time starter Jump On In is the 8-5 favorite, and if the 2-year-old runs to her works she might pop up and win for a good trainer (John Sadler) who rarely wins first time out.

Meanwhile, a second-time starter is likely to improve a ton after a better-than-looked debut. Masterful Lass got banged around in her debut two weeks ago, she finished full of run and galloped out super after crossing the wire seventh.

Trainer Chris Paasch is on a roll with his 2-year-olds this summer (three special-weight winners already at the meet), and Masterful Lass is qualified to score an upset in her second start. She is 8-1 on the line, and a bet at 4-1.

The bet: $50 win Masterful Lass (minimum odds 4-1).
