Free general admission at Oaklawn

Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Ark., will waive its $2 general admission fee for the upcoming meet, which opens Jan. 9, according to a release.

Oaklawn president Charles Cella made the move to mark the completion of an 18-month expansion of the track’s gaming center, and in appreciation of fans of the 110-year-old track.

amen. a leader with brains. now throw in free parking $0.50 programs,, $1 hot dogs and $2 beers and oaklawn will become a must see for all horseplayers. also, the take=out at the same levels as keeneland. most important. ARE YOU PAYING ATTENTION MR. KAY.? you can have all the event days that no one attends but the real fans and horseplayers will never put up with your nonsense. do a spreadsheet , mr. kay. nyra takeout vs. gulfstream takeout. why would anyone play nyra?

Mr. Cella should be held out as the GOLD STANDARD of how to treat fans. He is interested in one thing. Giving OP a good name and showing the fans he cares. He has a monopoly in his area, yet he does not abuse the fans. with high costs. His live gate is likely #3 in the country next to Del Mar and Saratoga. Bravo sir.

Not sure this is such a good idea. Oaklawn is already one of the best attended meets in the nation. This will only add to the crowds, require more concessions, more employees for various functions and yes even more mutual clerks/machines. Oaklawn could actually prosper from this move and who can we blame for that if it occurs - Mr. Cella and his Board of Directors. If so none of them will ever get jobs with NYRA or CDI !

Who goes to the tracks, nowadays? Online, the place to be. The downside, though, is that the odds across the nation have taken a HUGE hit. When and where in the "past" before the advent of worldwide online wagering, were the odds, anywhere, odds-on, as a matter of course? I can't recall EVER seeing 3-5, 2-5, 1-5, 1-2, and even 1-9, at any time. Now? The norm.

Jack, the reason you are seeing such low odds and low exacta payoffs is the amount bet on the pic 4 and pic 5. There is only XX amount of dollars to bet. If you take the the amount bet from the XX figure into the explosive growth of the pic 4 and pic 5 that leaves much less dollars bet in the win and exacta pool, much lower. i.e XX less handle in pic 4 and 5. So, with a much smaller handle in the win pool. the favorite becomes a lower price. I agree with you, in my 45 years in the game, I only remember one time when the "chalk" was so low. Laz Berarra, days, juicing in NY in the late 70's and early 80's. Smaller handle in win pool makes for lower odds on favorite.

Bobby Flay and the board of the NYRA must think this is a dumb idea! How can you attract more fans to the sport if you don't charge them to park and enter a track for the right to be charged a high takeout rate on what you wager! What are the people in charge of Oaklawn doing? I hope somebody in the racing industry will understand the irony of my comments. Unfortunately, .I'm sure they will be ignored! RAISE TAKEOUT, RAISE ADMISSION PRICES, RAISE PARKING FEES, THAT IS WHAT WILL DRAW MORE FANS TO THE SPORT! RIGHT BOBBY FLAY and others in the NYRA! You are setting a fine example of how NOT to save this sport!!!! !
