DEL MAR, Calif. – Trainer Dale Romans decided to send his Breeders’ Cup Juvenile runners out to California several weeks in front of the Breeders’ Cup, and the decision appears to be agreeing with Free Drop Billy, who continued his impressive local training with a five-furlong work on Saturday morning here at Del Mar that Daily Racing Form’s Mike Welsch caught in 1:00.86. Romans also worked Hollywood Star five furlongs, in 1:01.98, a bit later in the morning. Both were ridden by his life partner, exercise rider Tammy Fox. The Romans pair were among nine Breeders’ Cup runners who drilled on Saturday morning as action picked up noticeably with the beginning of the Breeders’ Cup now less than a week away. :: BC Workouts: Watch Mike Welsch's video updates from Del Mar Free Drop Billy and Hollywood Star had spent more than a week at Santa Anita, getting in one work there, before relocating to Del Mar. Their final works came one week in front of the Juvenile, which is next Saturday. “It’s gotten cold in Kentucky and it was hot out here," Romans said. “I didn’t want to ship them from the cold weather we’re having now to hot weather, so I’m glad we came out early. We’re all done. Now just line ’em up.” Free Drop Billy looked particularly well. He won the Grade 1 Breeders’ Futurity in his last start. “He’s a solid horse,” Romans said. “That work was super. You can’t work any better than he worked.” By contrast, Hollywood Star was not impressive while outfitted with blinkers, which he has not worn in a race before. This was an experiment. “I wanted to see if he’d like them, but it didn’t seem like he liked them,” Romans said. “I thought about giving them a shot, but now I think I won’t. “He’s never been focused all the way in his works or his races. When he figures it out, he’s going to be a superstar.” :: BREEDERS’ CUP 2017: Pre-entries, odds, comments, and more Mandella sent out Avenge, who is ticketed to the Filly and Mare Turf, for a five-furlong work in 59.81 seconds, a good time for a grass horse working on the dirt. Paradise Woods went five furlongs in 59.88 seconds in her final drill for the Distaff on Friday. Jockey Flavien Prat was aboard both Avenge and Paradise Woods. Jockey Paco Lopez flew in to work both Sharp Azteca and War Story for Navarro. Sharp Azteca, who is heading to the Dirt Mile on Friday, was timed by Welsch in 58.56 seconds for five furlongs; his official time of 58.60 seconds was the fastest of 13 at the distance on Saturday. War Story, who was pre-entered in both the Classic and the Turf on Saturday – with the Turf listed as his first preference – was timed in 58.77 seconds. The Tabulator, the Iroquois winner who along with Free Drop Billy and Hollywood Star will take on unbeaten Bolt d’Oro in the Juvenile, worked three furlongs in 36.58 seconds for trainer Larry Rivelli. Encumbered, who will move back to the grass for the Juvenile Turf on Saturday, worked a half-mile on dirt in 49.71 seconds for trainer Simon Callaghan. Tell Your Mama, headed to the Juvenile Fillies on Saturday, went six furlongs in 1:14.03 for trainer Bob Hess Jr. Final entries are due on Monday morning, with posts drawn later Monday afternoon for all 13 Breeders’ Cup races. :: Breeders' Cup PP packages: Get PPs, betting strategies, DRF+ Pro access, and more
