Chiming ($10) wins the Grade 3 Yerba Buena Breeders' Cup Handicap by 3 1/2 lengths over Noches de Rosa on Saturday.

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Chiming ($10), entered in Saturday's $107,500 Yerba Buena Breeders' Cup Handicap at Bay Meadows only because stablemate Pertuisane came down with a runny nose this week, won the about-1 1/8-mile Grade 3 turf race by 3 1/2 lengths over Noches de Rosa.

Chiming won the race that is 125 feet short of 1 1/8 miles in 1:45.41, just seven-one hundredths off the course record.

Chiming got a perfect stalking trip along the rail as Notting Hill set the pace with easy fractions. Lindsay Jean, who was second early, took over in the lane but could not hold off Chiming, who was making only her second start in the United States.

Chiming finished second, one-half length behind Pertuisane in her U.S. debut May 2 at Hollywood Park.

"I rode her with a lot of confidence," said winning jockey Corey Nakatani, who rode Pertuisane when the two met at Hollywood Park. "When (Pertuisane) couldn't run, I talked to my agent and said I wanted to go up and ride her. Hopefully, this will be a turning point and get me back in his barn."

Nakatani described Chiming's race as "awesome."

"She tracked, moved outside and quickened like you need," he said.

Humberto Ascanio, Frankel's assistant, said that he contacted Frankel early in the week to advise that Pertuisane had a runny nose.

"(Frankel) said not to worry, and made the decision to send her up Thursday," Ascanio said.

"I was impressed the way she ran last time because the one who was supposed to run here is nice."

Chiming, a private purchase in Europe last fall by Castleton Lyons, has "improved a lot" since being sent to Frankel according to Ascanio. "She started eating American food and grew up," Ascanio said of the 5-year-old mare.

Noches de Rosa beat Lindsay Jean by three lengths for second with 3-to-2 favorite Turtle Bow fourth.

Chiming's third career victory in 23 starts was worth $55,000, lifting her career earnings to $137,924.
