Frankel wins the Sussex Stakes over Canford Cliffs, earning a 136 rating in the World Thoroughbred Rankings.

Frankel, the undefeated English miler, topped the final 2011 World Thoroughbred Rankings compiled by the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities and released Tuesday.

Frankel’s 136 rating, achieved when he won the Sussex Stakes over Canford Cliffs and also for his victory over Excelebration in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, was four points higher than the second highest-rated performer, the Australian sprinting mare Black Caviar. The rankings reflect each horse’s best performance of the year and do not reflect season-long accomplishment, though Frankel, who won all five of his starts – four of them Group 1’s – would have qualified in that respect, too.

A Juddmonte Farms homebred trained by Henry Cecil, Frankel was expected to face a stern challenge from the highly rated older miler Canford Cliffs, but he whipped that foe by five lengths with a brilliant finish. Frankel’s 136 was better than any rating from 2010 and equal to the figure assigned Sea The Stars in 2009. Best of all, there will be more to come from Frankel this year, with the 4-year-old remaining in training for another season of racing, one that could possibly end this time in Breeders’ Cup Mile at Santa Anita.

Black Caviar, an eight-time group-race winner during 2011, achieved her 132 rating in the Lexus Newmarket Handicap, which she won by three lengths while giving weight to top Australian sprinters.

Rounding out the top six were Cirrus Des Aigles (128 in the Champion Stakes), Danedream (128 for the Arc de Triomphe), Canford Cliffs (127 for the Queen Anne), and Rewilding (127 for the Prince of Wales’s).

Blame wound up the second-highest rated horse of 2010, but Americans were nowhere to be found at the top of the 2011 lists. Drosselmeyer’s win in the Breeders’ Cup Classic earned the highest rating for the 2011 North American season, 124, while Acclamation’s victory in the Eddie Read was assigned a 123, the same number as Tizway’s Whitney. Caleb’s Posse and Game On Dude were rated 122, while Animal Kingdom’s Kentucky Derby win was rated 121.

It also was a subpar year internationally for 2-year-olds, if the 2011 rankings are used as a guide. While Frankel was rated at 126 as a 2-year-old of 2010, the highest rating from last year was 119, achieved by Darbirsim in the Prix Morny and Camelot in the Racing Post Trophy. The 119 figure was one pound less than the previous low figure for a 2-year-old world champion, with Grand Lodge rated at 120 in 1993.

The rankings are determined by a committee of national handicappers and leading racing secretaries from all of the world’s most prominent racing nations under the jurisdiction of the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities. They serve as the official championship ratings in Europe.
