Fort Erie: San Sousi holds on in Rainbow Connection

FORT ERIE, Ontario - Sans Sousi captured the $125,000 Rainbow Connection Stakes at Fort Erie on Monday evening, covering the five furlongs over a firm turf course in 58:67 seconds under jockey Luis Contreras.

Sans Sousi, rated off the early pace set by three rivals, bided her time, took command in early stretch, drew clear, and then was full out to stave off a late-charging Bent Attorney by a neck.

"She ran against some tough customers at Woodbine in her other turf starts," said assistant trainer Brent Harris. "It appears that she really took to the Fort Erie turf and proved that she can handle this surface."

Contreras continues to ride a hot streak following his wins in both the Queen's Plate and the Woodbine Oaks.

"I had horse under me at the three-eighths pole and just waited for the chance behind the speed battle. She responded willingly when I asked her, and I had a clear run through the stretch."

Bent Attorney, off the early pace, found her best stride in the final furlong, was closing ground on the winner, but came up short in a solid effort. Fabric, another closer, came on to catch the show spot, a length behind Bent Attorney.

Sans Sousi, sent off at 5-1, paid $13.50 and topped off a $54.50 exacta and a $535.10 trifecta. He is trained by Michael Doyle and owned by Eaton Hall Farm and M.J. Doyle Racing Stable Ltd.
