Forest Picnic sharp for Governor's Buckeye


Forest Picnic appears to be in a good spot to make it three in a row when he heads a field of 10 in the $75,000 Governor's Buckeye Cup Stakes over 1 1/4 miles at Thistledown.

A 5-year-old gelding, Forest Picnic is coming off a two-length victory in the 1 1/8-mile George Lewis Memorial here July 29, when he came from just off the pace to make the lead before midstretch and then drew away. On July 2, Forest Picnic rallied from just off the pace to get up in the final strides against statebred allowance company going 1 1/16 miles. Before that, he finished third against open-allowance company June 12 and was second twice in a row with similar company May 13 and May 29. Forest Picnic was fifth in the Governor's Buckeye last year. He is trained by Miguel A. Feliciano, and Ricardo Feliciano will ride at 122 pounds.

Ready for Roses has finished second in his last two starts, to Forest Picnic in the George Lewis Memorial and to Pyrite Springs by a neck in the Cleveland Gold Cup going 1 1/8 miles here July 2. Before that, Ready for Roses beat open allowance horses here June 17 going a mile and 70 yards and finished second against statebred company going one mile.

Bernard's Candy finished third in the George Lewis Memorial and may also pose a threat here.
