Fonner track report

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. - The countdown to this track's showcase event, the $100,000 Bosselman/Gus Fonner Handicap, is officially on. Nominations for the 1 1/16-mile handicap for older horses closed Wednesday afternoon. As of early Wednesday, 29 horses had been nominated for the April 26 race. Heading the list is Slider, runner-up to Medaglia d'Oro in the Oaklawn Handicap.

* The Heats On made a successful return to racing in Sunday's fourth race. Trained by Cliff Balcom, The Heats On made his last start at Bay Meadows in January 1998. Despite the five years off, the 9-year-old rallied to win a $5,000 nonwinners-of-three claimer at a half-mile.

* Leading rider Perry Compton collected his ninth four-win day of the meet last Saturday, culminating with his victory aboard Tate's Way in the Dowd Mile. Compton is packing his tack for the opening of Prairie Meadows in Altoona, Iowa, on Friday.
