Fonner: Song of Humor faces two previous winners of Budweiser-Tondi

Song of Humor, winner of the Grasmick Stakes at a half-mile on opening weekend at Fonner Park, heads a field of nine older runners in the $25,000 Budweiser-Tondi Stakes at six furlongs.

Standing in the way are the two horses who have accounted for the last three runnings of the Budweiser-Tondi. Reach One More, trained by Chuck Turco, won this race last year by a neck over two-time defending champion The Nutz, trained by Steve Hall. Both horses will be making their seasonal debuts in what should be a wide-open race.

Song of Humor dominated his opponents in the state last year as a 3-year-old, winning 7 of 11 starts. He finished out 2011 with a good fourth in the Grade 3 Kentucky Cup Sprint Stakes at Turfway Park in September. Trained by Milton Gaede, Song of Humor opened the season here with a sharp 1 1/2-length win in the Grasmick and he has since followed up with a pair of solid five-furlong workouts in preparation for this spot. Jose Ranilla will again be aboard.

Both Reach One More and The Nutz were victims of short campaigns last year. Reach One More made a pair of starts at Fonner, then went on the shelf for the remainder of the year. The Nutz made three starts last year, all at Fonner, before getting the remainder of the year off.
The Nutz will race as part of an uncoupled entry for Hall, who also sends out 4-year-old Buddy George, a three-time stakes winner last year. Trainer Temple Rushton also sends an entry in this spot with Kid Rambo and Louie Tre, the third- and fourth-place finishers in the Grasmick two weeks ago.
