Fonner: S C King in sharp form

S C King goes after his second stakes win of the year when he heads a field of seven in the $15,000-added Baxter Stakes for 3-year-olds at Fonner Park.

Trained by Lalita Ontiveros, S C King started his campaign with a sharp two-length victory in the Bachman Stakes on Feb. 28 going four furlongs. He was a 6 3/4-length winner of the Club House Special going six furlongs last fall, and looks like he can handle the stretch out to Saturday's distance of 6 1/2 furlongs. Armando Martinez will ride from post 1.

Cork the Barber, trained by David Anderson, was a nonthreatening fifth in the Bachman but also looks like he will appreciate the added distance. He dominated the six-furlong Columbus Futurity last fall by 10 lengths and should benefit from having a start under his belt. R.D. Williams will ride from post 6.

Jason Wise sends out The Straw Man off a nonwinners-of-two-lifetime allowance win over Nebraska-breds on March 11 in his second start of the season. He was beaten by both S C King and Cork the Barber in stakes at Columbus last fall. The Straw Man finished second in the Club House Special, then set the pace before tiring to third in the Futurity. Dennis Collins will ride from post 5.
