Fonner: Ransom Roberto benefits from inside trip in Bosselman/Gus Fonner

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. – Ransom Roberto took advantage of a ground-saving trip to surge clear in midstretch, and then held on to take the $75,000 Bosselman/Gus Fonner Stakes on Saturday afternoon at Fonner Park.

Ridden by David Cardoso, Ransom Roberto followed the pace contested by Shadowbdancing, Tenth Power, and Deputy Sparks while racing nearest the inside. Shadowbdancing appeared to get the upper hand entering the final turn of this five-eighths mile oval, but Ransom Roberto quickly moved to challenge inside entering the lane. He got clear through midstretch, and then kept Wild Jacob safe by three-quarters of a length, covering 1 1/16 miles in 1:47.40 over a track rated good.

Ransom Roberto returned $14 as the fourth choice in the field of 10 older horses and combined with Wild Jacob for an exacta worth $164.20. Trained by Wilson Brown for owner Steve Martin, Ransom Roberto moved his career mark to 10-4-4 from 31 starts and earnings of $289,723.

Shadowbdancing, the 2010 winner of this race trained by Terrel Gore, faded late to be third while the Steve Assmussen- trained Soul Warrior checked in fourth.

* Heavy favorite Diamond Joe ($3.40) cruised to a 6 1/4-length win in the $25,950 Fonner Special for 3-year-old colts and geldings.
