Fonner race declared no contest

The first race at Fonner Park on Saturday was declared a no contest following a spill entering the first turn of a three-turn mile and 70-yard race.

Apprentice Preto Espindola was riding Fifth Page when he was caught in tight quarters between rivals and clipped the heels of another horse. Both horse and rider went down with Espindola prone on the track as the field raced through the second turn. When the field reached the backstretch, the track's outriders instructed the riders to pull up.

Espindola was transported to St. Francis Medical Center. There was no immediate word on his condition. Fifth Page got up following the fall and appeared to have escaped injury.
