Fonner Park: Conyers saddles three winners


GRAND ISLAND, Neb. - Bill Conyers saddled three winners from three starters on the March 21 card. Conyers sent out Nanocity to a $3.40 score in the second race, Miss Shares ($7) in the seventh, and closed out the 10-race card with Lil'redheadeddevil ($6.80).

Conyers entered the weekend with three wins at the meet, and added another on Saturday to move into a three-way tie for second in the trainer standings with Ricky Gustafson and Marv Johnson. The three trail leading trainer David Anderson.

Miss Speed Dial joined Direct Gold as the first horses to win three races at the meet on Saturday. Miss Speed Dial won her third start here this meet in the $16,900 Pepsi Stakes for 3-year-old fillies for trainer Kelly Von Hemel.

Fonner's ongoing 50th anniversary celebration hits high gear Saturday as the popular Omaha-based band The Rumbles return for a 15th year. The Rumbles annual concert always attracts one of the meet's biggest crowds. Also Saturday, the Vintage & Classic Wheels Car Club has its annual classic car show on the main floor.

Leaping Plum will be the center of attention on the track Saturday, as the 12-year-old gelding aims for a third victory in the $25,000 Budweiser-Tondi Handicap at six furlongs. He won the race in 1995 and 1998.
