Fonner Park: Bevys Best on a streak

Bevys Best will try to stretch his win streak to four, all stakes, dating back to last August when he heads a strong field of 10 older horses going six furlongs in the $25,000 Budweiser-Tondi Stakes at Fonner Park on Saturday.

Also on Saturday, 3-year-olds match strides in the $10,000 Baxter Stakes, also at six furlongs.

Bevys Best is the likely Budweiser-Tondi favorite. A 4-year-old trained by Larry Staroscik, he opened this year's campaign facing older stakes horses for the first time in the Ogataul Stakes, and dominated from start to finish for a two-length win. He closed out his 3-year-old season last year with consecutive wins in the Hall of Fame and Columbus Breeders' Special stakes at Columbus, and sports a career mark of 5 wins from 7 starts. Yuri Yaranga will be aboard from post 5.

First Class Brass should pose the biggest threat to Bevys Best. Trained by Kelli Martinez, First Class Brass opened his year here with a very strong effort when he ran second to Tonight Rainbow in the Grasmick Stakes on Feb. 23. He earned stakes wins in the State Fair Board Stakes at Lincoln and the Labor Day Stakes at Columbus last year and posted a strong bullet work of 1:00 or five furlongs at Fonner on March 12. He drew post 8 with regular rider Armando Martinez aboard.

Okie Dozer, trained here by Dan Coughlin, should also draw plenty of support coming out of optional-claiming company at Hawthorne over the winter. His last start was a fourth-place finish there on March 20, and he should be primed for a strong performance.

Ittakestwobaby heads a field of six in the Baxter Stakes as part of an uncoupled entry for trainer David Anderson. Ittakestwobaby should be a strong favorite off his 5 1/2-length win in the half-mile Bachman Stakes March 15. The other part of the Anderson entry is Tellin on You, third and second in his two starts this year, both in entry-level allowance races.
