Fonner Park: Anderson joins elite

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. - The David Anderson stable has been red-hot in the opening weeks of the meet here, sending out winners at a 26-percent clip while hitting the board with 27 of 45 starters.

Last Friday, Anderson saddled four winners on the nine-race card to join Tim Gleason and Marv Johnson as the only trainers to accomplish that feat at this track. Gleason and Johnson have won four races on a card multiple times and share the record of five winners on a card.

With seven winners over the past weekend, Anderson has a 12-5 lead over his nearest competitor after four weekends of racing.

Rider Perry Compton also had a four-win day Friday, his fourth of the meet. Compton continues to be the hottest rider at the track with an early 26-10 lead over Jerry Carkeek in the rider standings. At age 50, Compton is seeking his fourth consecutive and eighth overall riding title.

Alonzo Guajardo, the leading rider here in 1991 and 1992, had a riding double on Sunday.
