Fonner: Missy Can Do wheels back

Missy Can Do returns quickly on the heels of her win against mares in last week's Bold Accent Stakes to take on the boys at Fonner Park in the $10,000 Grasmick Stakes at four furlongs.

Missy Can Do's biggest obstacle may well be the weather, with the forecast calling for a high in the low teens as winter conditions have made a rare appearance here this season.

Trainer Joe Thomas had Missy Can Do primed for a big effort last weekend when she took the Bold Accent for the third straight year. She holds a decided edge in the Grasmick with that race under her belt, since all of the other entrants will be making their seasonal debuts.

Missy Can Do scored five wins from 12 starts a year ago. She has not been headed at the first two calls of any of her recent races, and Saturday should be no exception. Armando Martinez will ride from post 7.

Trackem 'n' Wackem, owned and bred by Bob Lee, is a speedy front-runner but will need a big effort. Now 6, Trackem 'n' Wackem recorded his only win last year against $15,000 claiming company, but was stakes-placed against some of the top sprinters in the state.

Trainer Ron Wise send outs The Straw Man for his 4-year-old debut. Although a half-mile is not his best lick, he should be running hard in the stretch.

* Fonner Park officials made the call early Thursday morning to cancel Friday's nine-race card, as frigid temperatures, strong winds, and snow moved into the area. The weekend forecast calls for temperatures to hit the mid- to low teens Friday and Saturday before rising back into the 20's on Sunday. There were no immediate plans to make up the lost races.
