Fonner: Bach's Homebrew launches season in Ogataul

Email

Bach’s Homebrew makes his seasonal debut and looks to extend a three-race win streak when he heads a compact field of five older Nebraska-breds in the $25,000 Ogataul Stakes at six furlongs on Saturday at Fonner Park.

Bach’s Homebrew dominated the older division runners in the state last year, winning 6 of 8 starts, including this race in his seasonal bow.

Trained by Larry Staroscik, Bach’s Homebrew has won 12 of 18 career starts and $147,519.

Trainer Steve Hall sends out an uncoupled entry of Buddy George and From the Ashes and may pose the biggest threat to the favorite. From the Ashes was claimed for $10,000 here on March 4 off a strong winning effort. Buddy George was sixth in the Budweiser-Tondi Stakes here March 10 and should be on ready for a much improved effort.

◗ In the co-feature on the 11-race program, Spice Swirl and Gracie Jane should vie for the role of favorite in a wide-open $25,000 Orphan Kist Stakes for older Nebraska-bred fillies and mares.

Spice Swirl was a strongly closing sixth as the favorite in the half-mile Bold Accent Stakes here on March 3. She rallied from eight lengths back at the top of the stretch to be beaten two lengths in that race and should be poised for a top effort for trainer Brian Roberts.

Gracie Jane was fourth in a non-conditioned allowance here March 10 and is seeking to regain her stakes-winning ways after going winless in 2011. Gracie Jane won the Al Swihart Stakes here in 2010 and was third in that race last year for trainer Jim Cranwell. She was second in the Orphan Kist last year and owns a 5-8-5 career mark from 23 starts.
