Folk captures UAE Guineas

Folk continued to hint at the potential she showed winning an Aqueduct maiden race last October by 10 1/4 lengths when she led throughout to take the listed $250,000 UAE Guineas at Nad Al Sheba on Thursday night.

Formerly trained by Tom Albertrani for Darley, Folk was switched to Sheikh Mohammed's son Hamdan this winter and turned over to Nad Al Sheba trainer Ismail Mohammed. In her first start since her maiden score, Folk defeated 12 rivals under Kerrin McEvoy, getting the dirt mile in a stakes-record 1:35.84. Greetings was second, with Satulagi, who had been 11th in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies, eighth, beaten 25 3/4 lengths.

Ismail Mohammed said Folk will be pointed for the 1 1/8-mile UAE Oaks on March 8.

Earlier, National Colour recovered from a poor start to lead virtually throughout to win the $110,000 Friday Sprint, a five-furlong allowance, by 1 3/4 lengths, covering the distance in a modest 58.13. Trainer Sean Tarry said she may go straight to the Dubai Golden Shaheen on March 31.

* Miss Andretti, winner of the five-furlong Lightning Stakes two weeks ago, will attempt to notch the second leg of the Global Sprint Challenge at Moonee Valley on Saturday in the six-furlong Group 1 Australia Stakes.
