Flint has confidence in 'Model'

Bernie Flint is tired of hearing about all the trouble Sense of Style had in the Alcibiades. He believes it takes away from the race his filly Runway Model ran in winning that race by a head three weeks ago at Keeneland.

"The best horse won is the way I look at it," Flint said.

Flint says he is looking forward to meeting Sense of Style and whoever else shows up in the $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies at Lone Star Park on Oct. 30. Runway Model was one of 16 2-year-old fillies pre-entered Wednesday for the 1 1/16-mile race. It is the largest number of pre-entrants since 2000. Only 14 horses will be permitted to enter when the race is drawn next Wednesday.

Mona Lisa, a maiden trained by Aidan O'Brien, was selected into the body of the field over winners Culture Clash and Quiet Honor. Culture Clash would need one defection to get in; Quiet Honor would need two. Trainer Richard Dutrow pre-entered Sis City, the third-place finisher in the Matron, but said Wednesday that he would prefer not to run. "We're not definite to go," said Dutrow, who would prefer to wait for the Demoiselle on Nov. 27 at Aqueduct.

Runway Model is certainly running, and Flint said he believes she could be the one to beat.

"I think we won the best route race at 1 1/16 miles; we won it three weeks before the Breeders' Cup," Flint said. "It's going to take one very nice horse to beat her."

Runway Model came from well off the pace to win the Alcibiades by a head over Sharp Lisa. Sense of Style, the favorite in the Alcibiades, was right in front of Runway Model in upper stretch, but Runway Model got to the outside while Sense of Style got stuck in traffic. Sense of Style finished fifth, beaten 2 1/4 lengths.

It was the third win from eight starts for Runway Model, a daughter of Petionville and a half-sister to Mambo Train, who finished 11th in last year's Juvenile. Flint said he always thought Runway Model would prove better routing, and any success she had sprinting would be a bonus.

"As far as I'm concerned, this filly has done everything we've asked her, and she didn't even run on Lasix until the last time," Flint said.

Flint said he noticed a "couple of specks" of blood in Runway Model one morning after training, so "we put her on Lasix because we had a good reason to put her on Lasix."

Rafael Bejarano will retain the mount in the Juvenile Fillies. Runway Model will likely ship to Texas at the beginning of next week.

Sweet Catomine, the Norfolk winner, was installed as the 5-2 morning-line favorite by Daily Racing Form national handicapper Mike Watchmaker. Sense of Style (4-1) and Balletto (6-1) are the only other ones under 10-1.

* Higher World, winner of the Grade 2 Mazarine, worked five furlongs in 1:02.60 Wednesday morning at Woodbine. Trainer Mark Casse said Higher World would van down to Louisville from Canada on Friday and fly to Texas on Sunday. Patrick Husbands will ride Higher World in the Breeders' Cup.
