Flashback for Salty Wave

Salty Wave, who ran in the Grade 1 Spinaway at Saratoga back in 2007, set a course record at Lone Star last Saturday. She covered five furlongs on turf in 55.09 seconds when she won an optional $35,000 claimer by 2 1/2 lengths. It was the third straight win for Salty Wave, a $20,000 claim in April whose current win streak has come in turf sprints at Lone Star.

"She's going through a good spell right now," said Karl Broberg, who trains Salty Wave. "If you look at her entire career, she's shown speed and ability and won a stakes earlier on."

Salty Wave made her career debut as a 2-year-old of 2007, and won a two-furlong race at Calder. One start later, she won an allowance going five furlongs with a Beyer of 83. Salty Wave then headed to Saratoga, where she was eighth in the Spinaway.

She would become a stakes winner the next season, taking the $55,000 Ravolia at five furlongs on turf at Calder. Eventually, Salty Wave started to change hands through the claiming ranks, making her way from Tampa, to Presque Isle, Arlington, Keeneland, Fair Grounds, and then Lone Star. Her course record Saturday lowered the mark of 55.11 that Bonjournose set on June 18, 2009.

Broberg said the 5-year-old Salty Wave would likely make her next start in another overnight race.
