Flamethrowintexan takes Longacres Mile

AUBURN, Wash. - Flamethrowintexan set all the fractions, then dug in to turn back a stretch-long challenge from Papi Chullo to win Sunday's Grade 3, $250,000 Longacres Mile by a neck in 1:34.40. Southern Africa got up for third in the field of 11.

Flamethrowintexan, who was ridden by Ricky Frazier, gave trainer Jim Penney his fifth score in the Longacres Mile, the most prestigious race in the Northwest. Flamethrowintexan, a 5-year-old son of Way West, paid $6.80 to win as the second choice to Papi Chullo and banked $137,500 for his owners, Paul and Lori Heist.

Also on Sunday, Queenledo stalked a three-way speed duel through six furlongs in 1:09.80, then pounced on the leaders turning for home and drew out to an 8 1-4 length victory in the $100,000 Emerald Breeders' Cup Distaff for fillies and mares. Queenledo, a 4-year-old daughter of Slewdledo from the barn of trainer Tim McCanna, covered the mile distance in 1:34.80 under Sandi Gann. She was followed across the wire by Karis Makaw, who dueled for the early lead, and Bardy Woman.
