Five try for Pennsylvania license

The Pennsylvania Horse Racing Commission has received applications from five companies hoping to get one of two remaining racetrack licenses in the state, commission officials said Wednesday.

The applications, which were finalized at a commission meeting on Tuesday, include proposals from Magna Entertainment, which already owns and operates the Meadows, a harness track near Pittsburgh; a company owned by Pennsylvania horsemen; and three local developers. The racing commission will set dates for public hearings on the applications within several weeks, according to Kristina Watson, a spokeswoman for the commission.

Companies have been clamoring to get licenses in Pennsylvania because of a bill passed earlier this year legalizing slots at seven racetracks and seven other sites in the state.
