Five Steps goes last to first

The 7-year-old gelding Five Steps ($4.20) successfully shortened up from 1 1/8 miles to 6 1/2 furlongs to win the $50,000 Taking Risks Stakes, the closing-day feature at Timonium.

Five Steps, now 3 for 4 this season, provided jockey Juan Acosta with his fourth of five wins on the nine-race card and clinched his second consecutive Timonium riding title.

Based at the Bowie Training Center with trainer Chris Grove, Five Steps swept from last to first with a four-wide move on the final turn, blowing past 8-5 second choice P. Kerney, who wound up third in a field of six older Maryland-breds.

Five Steps, who most recently was seventh of eight in the Grade 3 Iselin Handicap at Monmouth, finished 1 1/2 lengths in front of 8-1 shot Celtic Innis after completing the distance in 1:16.84.
